Power on the Line

The civic power of our local communities is on the line.

What is Power on the Line?

Conventional civic engagement wisdom has long encouraged people interested in expanding democracy to build collective power by registering voters and getting them out to vote. But within our current landscape in Alabama, even if we are able to persuade our neighbors into more active engagement, they will be faced with a political system that is hostile towards the full democratic participation of its increasingly nonwhite population.

Instead, we are focused on the unique opportunity to broaden concepts of civic engagement by creatively utilizing the narratives of plaintiffs involved in the redistricting case in front of the United States Supreme Court, Milligan v. Merrill.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Milligan will affirm or undermine the ability of local actors to hold their governments accountable to democratic standards. The future of our literal and collective family is on the line. Democracy, Freedom, and the Legacy of the Supreme Court and this Country are on the Line.

Listen to “Narissa’s Home (Just One)” from the Caregiver Road Trip album.

This song is the product of a collaboration between the Shake the Field artists collective and featured artist Felt Five Thompson. This song explores the compromises people make to build ideas about home, the way the stories we tell about home shape our identities, and the ways in which redistricting impact our idea of home.
